The Art of the Small Batch: How We Make Every Fenwick & Merrik Candle
There's a reason we call it small batch. Not because we have to — but because we choose to.
At Fenwick & Merrik 1894, every candle begins the same way: with intention. We don't run production lines. We don't chase volume. We pour each candle by hand, in our Alberta workshop, using the same deliberate process that quality craftspeople have followed for generations.
It Starts with the Wax
We use only premium natural wax — selected for its clean burn, superior scent throw, and the way it holds a flame. The difference between a candle made with quality wax and one that isn't is something you notice immediately. A cleaner burn. A truer scent. A jar that looks as good on the last burn as it did on the first.
The Fragrance
Every scent in our collection is hand-selected and blended to tell a story. Whether it's the rugged cedar and open air of the Expedition Collection or the warm, refined notes of the Heritage Collection — each fragrance is chosen to evoke a feeling, a place, a memory. We don't use synthetic shortcuts. We use fragrance oils that are skin-safe, phthalate-free, and blended to last.
The Pour
Temperature matters. Timing matters. The angle of the pour matters. These aren't things you can automate without losing something. So we don't. Each candle is poured at the precise temperature needed to ensure an even, bubble-free finish and a clean scent release from the first burn to the last.
The Cure
After pouring, every candle cures for a minimum of 48 hours before it's inspected, labelled, and prepared for shipping. This isn't a step we rush. The cure time allows the fragrance to fully bind with the wax — which means a stronger, more consistent scent throw when you light it at home.
Why It Matters
In a world of mass production and overnight shipping, small batch means something. It means someone cared enough to slow down. To check the work. To make sure what arrives at your door is worth the shelf space you give it.
